Leading French car manufacturer appoints JOYNEXT as Tier 1 supplier in 5G connectivity for upcoming vehicle platforms

• JOYNEXT develops and produces advanced radio telematic control unit (RTCU) for a wide range of worldwide upcoming vehicle models and new car brand for one of the leading French car makers

Dresden (Germany). One of the leading French car makers appoints JOYNEXT as a direct supplier (Tier 1) for their entire European automotive group. The two already had a trustful cooperation for a couple of years. Over the next two years, the Dresden-based automotive electronics specialist will develop and produce an innovative radio telematics control unit for the carmaker.

The advanced component will be used in a wide range of the automotive group’s new vehicle platforms worldwide, enabling connectivity with the 5G mobile standard. A particularly exposed functionality concerns the integration of Cellular V2X (C-V2X) within the overall solution. V2X is based on the 3GPP standard and, in contrast to e.g. WLANp, has the advantage that it not only enables V2V communication, but can also communicate with the ordinary cellular network. Thus, the two types of communication V2N and V2V enabling car communication, are captured in a single technical solution.

The first car with the JOYNEXT control unit is expected to be on the road in 2024, followed by millions of vehicles over the next years in key markets. In addition to Europe and China, the cooperation also extends to activities in North America.

Technological breakthrough for 5G connectivity and V2X applications

The new and innovative telematics system from JOYNEXT will be the first of its kind to be installed in a wide range of vehicles of the car manufacturer. With this new generation, the automotive company aims to create a group-wide standard that allows networking with 5G – a solution that was introduced by JOYNEXT with Chinese customers and then adapted and enhanced for European standards.
